About the University

The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Periyar University at Salem on 17th September 1997 as per the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The University covers the area comprising four districts namely Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. The University Grants Commission bestowed 12(B) and 2f status to the Periyar University. NAAC reaccredited the University with “A” Grade in 2015. The University bagged 90th rank among Indian Universities by MHRD NIRF 2018. The University is named after the Great Social Reformer E. V. Ramasamy, affectionally called “Thanthai Periyar”. He fought for the cause of protecting and promoting the interest of the oppressed and the downtrodden in India especially in Tamilnadu. One of his missions was to provide equal oppor tunity for all including the oppressed and the downtrodden in education and employment. The University has 27 Depar tments, 106 Affiliated Colleges, and one PG Extension Centre offering various UG, PG, M.Phil, and Ph.D. programmes.

About the Department

The Depar tment of Computer Science was established in the year 2002, with the objective of impar ting high quality education in the domain of Computer Science and Applications. The Depar tment received Rs. 81.50 Lakhs under Special Assistance Programme (SAP) II phase from UGC in the year 2018. With rapidly evolving technology and the continuous need for innovation, the Depar tment has always produced quality Professionals, holding impor tant positions in Information Technology industries in India and abroad.

The Depar tment currently offers academic programmes leading to the award of M.C.A., M.Sc. (CS), M.Phil., Ph.D. and PG diploma in Data Analytics degrees. The mission of the Depar tment of Computer Science is to impar t high quality post graduate education and carry out leading edge research in various research areas such as Image processing, Pattern Recognition, Data Mining, Mobile Computing and Bioinformatics.
